Learn how to store baby formula, how to prepare it, and what to do with leftovers.
Producers recommend that after opening a formula powder should be used within 2-4 weeks. After this time, a formula can change its nutritional properties.
You can find exact information about the expiry date on the packaging. Time differences, depending on the brand, may result from tests carried out by each producer for their product, which concern the behaviour of the formula powder in conditions without a protective atmosphere. The form of the formula packaging may also affect its expiry date. It can be different for a can and different for a cardboard box.
Producers do not recommend pouring the formula powder into other containers. First of all, the packaging contains exact information on the preparation of baby formula, its composition and dosage, as well as the expiration date. Secondly, the original packaging ensures that the powder is kept properly clean. During pouring, bacteria or small impurities can get into it, which affect the quality of formula.
According to the instructions, the packaging with formula powder should be stored in a dry, cool place at a temperature from 10ºC to a maximum of 25ºC. It should not be kept in a refrigerator both before and after opening. Also, it shouldn’t be placed near sources of heat and humidity, e.g. by the oven or a boiling kettle.
Formula powder is packaged in special conditions, with a protective atmosphere. This ensures the right quality of formula. To keep it fresh for as long as possible, the packaging with it should be carefully closed after each use so that microbes do not grow in it. It is worth sticking to this rule, because thanks to it you will be sure that the formula is of full value.
A portion of formula is best to prepare just before feeding. If, for some reason, you do not give it to your child immediately, you can put it in the fridge. However, remember to use it at your baby’s next feeding, because it will start to multiply bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
When sucking, saliva gets into baby formula, which is an excellent medium for micro organisms. For this reason, leftovers should be poured out. Such formula cannot be reheated, refrigerated or frozen.
Remember to thoroughly wash the bottle and its components after each feeding, and then scald them. In addition, feeding equipment for babies under 6 months of age must be sterilized.
It is not recommended to freeze baby formula because the low temperature affects it negatively. Among other things, fats may separate, and as a result your baby may have problems digesting it later.
Try not to prepare milk for storage. It's best to do it just before feeding because it is the safest for an infant. If for some reason you need to heat the food, do it within a maximum of 2 hours from its preparation.
Remember that baby formula cannot be boiled because it will lose its valuable minerals and some vitamins due to the high temperature.
